Traditional Iron Gateways

Blacksmith’s gate, St. Mary’s graveyard

The village contains several traditional iron gateways, which probably date from the 19th or early 20th century. These include a hand-forged blacksmith’s gate giving access to St. Mary’s graveyard, which is  ornamented with crosses and painted black. Another blacksmith’s gate is found on the approach road from Brownscastle, where allows access to an agricultural field. Once common, such field gates are now becoming increasingly rare.

Ornate gate off Chapel Street

A more ornate iron gate is found on Chapel Street, where it allows access to the rear of the old school building, while another iron gate is located at the entrance to St. Munn’s church (COI). These gates represent important pieces of vernacular street furniture and should be maintained and retained wherever possible.
